National Training Ship - Appleby
Appleby is the national training ship of the Maritime Volunteer Service. Built in 1964 and powered by a Lister Blackstone dry sump engine, this former Royal Navy Mk1 Fleet Tender has been converted to carry an essential crew of 5 with accommodation for an additional 10 crew/trainees. She is used to train volunteers of the MVS in the operation of coastal craft, small ship handling and as crew for team building.
Examples of training and experience include:
- Navigation - course plotting, chart work and record keeping
- Seamanship - helmsman, coming alongside and watch keeping
- Engineering - engine checking, starting and maintenance
In addition to being a valuable training asset, Appleby is also good mother ship from which other smaller craft can operate at events such as Cowes Week, Bournemouth Air Festival and is likely to be involved with other MVS craft in the forthcoming Olympics in 2012 at the sailing events in Weymouth.
