Weymouth & Portland Unit Flourishes
Congratulations go to Rob Chick, Tony Fairey and Terry Sherman as they are the first three members of the re-formed Weymouthand Portland Unit to complete the MVS Induction Course in basic seamanship – including knots! - Marine Engineering and Chart Work. All three are now qualified as VOLUNTEERS. Volunteer epaulettes were presented to each just before Christmas by David Heap, former Head of the original Portland Unit. Rob, Tony and Terry have between them many years of experience on the water, and they bring this and their enthusiasm to the MVS.
Now Rob, Tony and Terry are embarking upon the Able Volunteer Course where they will learn generic Boat Handling and Seamanship, Engineering, Marine Communications and Operations Room skills in greater depth using RIBs, launches and other craft. They will be ready to take part in whatever exciting maritime activities, events and challenges come our way in the future.
Well done All!
In addition, members of Weymouth and Portland Unit are making the most of the opportunities provided by nearby Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. David Heap has worked with the Academy providing Safety Boat and Press Boat cover for many years. Rob Chick, who has worked as a volunteer at the Academy with David previously, will be joined for 2011 by Tony Fairey and Lee Sketchley, supporting prestigious international sailing events by acting as Safety Boat or Committee Boat crew. More about this later.
So here’s to an exciting year on the water for the Unit in Weymouth Bay!
