A new MVS group set up in the Humber Region (Grimsby Unit)

GrimsbyThe MVS Grimsby group has been recently formed and is based on the M.V. Hambledon, ex R.N. tender (Clovelly Class), a 110 ton offshore category B training vessel. Members are in the process of bringing the ship up to the MCA category 2 standard of certification and regularly serve as crew for visits to the Bull Sand Fort . One of the objectives is to assist the Streetwise Charitable Trust in restoring the fort for use as a drug rehabilitation centre. It is also intended to set up an observation post on the Bull Sands Fort which can be used to monitor events such as regattas.

The group also undertake training voyages in their own right and are developing links with local groups such as the Sea Cadets, Sea Scouts, local colleges and diving groups.

We are keen to assist all those who wish to learn more about nautical matters in a safe and structured environment. Some members are already involved in teaching members of the Sea Cadets and others are planning to do so. We have already formed informal links with officers of the local Sea Cadets who have assisted in crewing our offshore training ship.

In addition to the Hambledon, the group is also in the process of refurbishing a 4.7m fibreglass boat and a 4m inflatable, both with outboard motors. We are soon hoping to acquire a 5m RIB.

Our offshore training ship, the M.V. Hambledon, requires much input from members and other volunteers, but we feel that the potential benefits to the region make this tremendously worthwhile. We have a number of local and national sponsors who have given us huge support.

We are actively recruiting new members and looking for new ways to develop the group and widen its usefulness to the local community.
