Merchant Navy Day 2012

Across the country MVS Units have attended their local Merchant Navy Day service. So it was on Merseyside. However when Chris Todd  our AVO North arrived at the Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Liverpool a surprise awaited him. Chris was approached by the Chairman of Liverpool Retired Seafarers Association, Pat Moran.

Pat asked if any of the MVS contingent had any Dutch ancestry, being well aware of Merchant Navy humour Chris thought hard and replied “NO”. Pat went on “Never mind; Todd sounds nearly Dutch, Their Consul has had to cry off and we need a smart fellow to lay their wreath”. Knowing he had been well and truly taken in Chris agreed. “Well we are the Volunteer Service” quipped Chris “It is always an honour to join all the hands at this service and to be able to assist on behalf of our colleagues from across the sea was an extra.”

So Chris quickly handed the MVS Wreath to our Assistant Secretary Paul Hutchins and joined the foreign delegates. It was noted that his accent did not give the others too much trouble. Paul noted " I was not expected to take part in a parade, but it really felt good to march behind the Sea Cadets band"
