Big Weekend for Severn

The Severn Unit has launched its “Water Display Team” at Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend Festival.
The unit was heavily involved in the event which was held over the Easter weekend.
The plan was designed to bring the town and river closer together and to promote a real carnival feel within the community.

Head of Unit Nic Price said “This was the first venture undertaken by the town for some years and we were pleased and proud to be in the forefront of the water based activities.
It was a real action packed weekend in which we were involved in overseeing the safety of people around the riverside, marshalling the duck races and leading the procession of decorated boats”.

The units Head of Seamanship Tim Huckvale devised a display which involved a rescue from the unit’s upturned Gemini inflatable which had been anchored in the middle of the river.
Along with MVS member Russ Davidson he successfully righted the boat before the units new fibrelight cradle which was recently donated by KFC Survival was deployed.
Deputy Head of Unit Jane Thomas and member David Peet demonstrated how easily a casualty could be retrieved from the water and brought safely aboard.
