More Scout Training for East Sussex 1
Eight Scouts from the 1st Burwash Troop and their leaders spent a day on board the MVS’s national training vessel, East Sussex 1 during the recent half term holiday.
In the morning the youngsters learnt various nautical skills while the vessel was alongside her berth at Eastbourne.
Later, MVS members took ES1 out into Eastbourne Bay and along the coast to just off the Beachy Head lighthouse.
The Scouts took turns in steering, acting as lookouts – spotting the many lobster pot buoys in the bay – and plotting the vessel’s position.
Scout leader Robert Firth thanked ES1’s crew saying that the Scouts had thoroughly enjoyed the day.
He added, “It really helps Scouts’ engagement with the things we teach them when they can experience practical skills in use, such as tying a bowline around your waist and navigating along the coast.
Head of Unit, Keith Johnson, said, “This was very a successful finish to our Scout training programme for this year.
We are looking forward to developing our work with the Scouts further in 2017.”
