The Bristol Unit of the MVS is a small friendly group of boat and seafaring enthusiasts who undertake training and service in the arts of seamanship, including navigation, boat-handling, meteorology, tides, radio procedure, marine engineering, ropes and knots. We are based in a former dockworker’s cottage next to the Cumberland Basin and have two Unit boats based in Bristol Floating Harbour. MVS Bristol Unit is involved with the Bristol Local Resilience Forum.
New members are welcome, either with or without maritime or boating experience. We offer a Maritime Foundation Course followed by comprehensive training both ashore and afloat, which can lead to nationally recognised qualifications such as First Aid, VHF Radio and RYA Powerboat certificates.
We meet weekly throughout the year from 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings at 4, Old Dock Cottages, Bristol BS1 6XL for talks and for practical training both ashore and afloat.
