Located on the fringes of the Snowdonia National Park and near the Menai Strait our Unit meets weekly in an annexe of Bangor University.
We meet on Tuesday evenings at 19:00 for two hours in addition to ad hoc days for longer courses which are usually at the weekend.
Over a minimum two-year period we offer the opportunity to gain four key basic qualifications – RYA Powerboat (level 2), RYA Diesel engine, RYA First Aid and assistance in gaining RYA/MCA Short Range Certificate VHF Radio with GMDSS which is now a self-guided computer-based training course with classroom training if desired .
On-going weekly training focuses (in conjunction with Bangor University) on all the elements of RYA Day Skipper (Theory) the entire RYA Basic navigation and Safety Course is also covered.
When candidates feel ready we ask an external assessor to visit and assess members’ Day Skipper Theory skills to award the Certificate.
We have a 5m Chinook RIB with 60HP Mariner outboard that we operate on the Strait for training and community support purposes. As we are based around a university city our focus tends to be towards training students, mainly of School of Ocean Sciences, to enliven their CVs. Lately we have engaged to promote and support locally the Government’s Maritime 2050 – Navigating the Future strategy as a launchpad to employment anywhere in the world.
Within easy reach of the Unit is the Menai Strait and several stretches of coastline.
The Unit maintains strong links with the maritime community including Pryfysgol, Bangor University’s School of Ocean Science, RNLI Stations across Anglesey, HM Coastguard Holyhead and the National Coastwatch Institution’s Stations at Point Lynas and Rhoscolyn.
